Play areas/Sports pitches
Sport fever
It is now widely accepted that sport can play a major role in our general wellbeing. 'As well as providing participants and spectators with years of enjoyment, sport makes a significant contribution to our economy, our environment and our society' (Sport England). Now that Britain will be hosting the 2012 Olympics, sport fever is sweeping across the country.
Across the Canterbury district, there are:
- 73 senior football pitches;
- 83 junior/mini football pitches;
- 37 cricket pitches;
- 30 adult and junior rugby pitches; and
- 21 hockey pitches
How can you benefit?
In August 2003, Canterbury City Council adopted a new Playing Field Strategy. This sets out our future policy, aims and objectives. It also gives information about how we will be working with our partners, such as sports clubs, parish councils, Kent County Council and local schools to make sure you, the local community, can benefit from the sports facilities in the district.
Why play time is good for the kids
'Play' is a key element of children's social, emotional and intellectual development.
Canterbury City Council's Play Strategy aims to improve the quality of play facilities by providing stimulating and imaginative fixed play areas throughout the district. Children and young people will be actively involved with this. In summary:
- Play facilities will be continuously maintained to a high standard and accessible to all.
- Good quality and well organised play activities will be made available throughout the district.
- Safe outdoor casual play space will be provided.
The work we have planned will improve the quality of life for children and young people in the district.
Double use of school playing fields
The council is talking to schools across the district, to see whether more of our playing fields can be hired for use by local sports clubs. For further details, including hire charges, phone the Bookings Office, Serco Ltd, on 0800 031 9091.
